Susan Won

Life feels very different now than a few weeks ago when I last wrote an entry in this blog. I haven't been up to the task of creating a new entry until now, but here we go.

I guess a simple, concise explanation will be the best place to start. As many of you may know, Doug's Mom, Susan, went home to be with Jesus on June 12th. Leading up to that, Doug and I spent the last week of her life living at his parent's home and assisting his Dad and sister Kristen with her care. It has been a difficult and emotional time for our family....and yet in some really cool ways one of the most God-focused, wonderful experiences of our lives as well. It is kind of hard to sort it all out, but I'm working on it. Thank you to all who have sent cards and messages...truly it has been so encouraging.

But I have been at a loss as to how to write about this....What do you write that will do justice to a loss that will completely alter your world? How do you put the grief and hope we are simultaneously walking through right now into finite words and then place it on paper? I often deal with things well by writing...but I find that in this situation my heart is so full and there is so much to say that my fingers fail me and I continue to see a blank page in front me of as I quickly get overwhelmed by the emotions of the past weeks.

Susan was so much more than a "mother-in-law" to me....she was my friend. She was fun and funny and loved me as if I had been born into her family, not married into it. It has been hard to deal with all of this on so many levels...my husband lost his mother, my daughter lost her grandmother, my unborn son will never get to meet her, and I lost one of the best friends I've ever had. That is a really, really big hole...and one that when I think about it too much just seems more than I can bear. And yet...truly it isn't more than I can bear. I know Susan loved Jesus and she is with Him now. I know that she was ready to be in heaven, even if she wanted to stay here for us. I know that God is the same today as he was 6 years ago before Susan was ever diagnosed with cancer...He loves us, He loves her, and He is writing an incredible story with our lives...we feel privileged to be used and be a part of what He is doing.

Yet grief is still real...it is still a part of this. It is something we wake up with and go to sleep with and that catches us off guard at random times throughout the day. I have heard other people talk about walking through grief...I know that what I am experiencing on many levels is not new or unique to me...it is a familiar path that many others have walked through before me and many will walk through after. It is a path I will have to walk again in this life when I inevitably face the loss of other loved ones, whether I like it or not. But even if it is not unique to me, the way I walk it will be. It is still my walk to take, and I am trying to embrace it and walk it well...I don't think the walk can be avoided, and I want to be a more Christ-like person when I come out on the other side.

In the first few days that followed Susan's death, we would often find ourselves sitting together as a family just talking....to process, reminisce, and tell stories about this woman we all loved so much. I am so grateful for those conversations...I feel like there is so much that I don't want to forget about all of this, I think the time to breathe and sit and talk was absolutely invaluable. One conversation that has stood out to me from those many we have shared came from Dana. Dana relayed a story about the two of them after Susan's first surgery right after she was diagnosed. He said after they found out, they sat down and had a very purposeful conversation about the reality of this news and what it would mean for them. They decided they had two choices...this could make them bitter or better, but they needed to make a choice. They chose together to trust God to use them however He wanted...that they wanted this journey to make them better.

As someone who got to watch them walk this path up-close and personal these last 5 1/2 years, there is not a doubt in my mind they both succeeded at that. And truthfully, they made many of the rest of us better people just from watching them.

I think if you are a regular reader of this blog, you may hear more of this process from me as I get more of my emotions sorted out from all of it. And I hope you don't mind accompanying me as I walk through this valley...it helps to know I'm not walking trough it alone.

One of my absolute favorite "Susan" phrases that I heard many times during these last 5+ years is the one I think I keep coming back to over and over in these days after the funeral....she said right after she was diagnosed that for her, this was a "win-win" situation....if God chose to heal her, she wins...but if He takes her home to Him, she wins that way too. My husband sent out an e-mail to those that were following Susan's journey on the morning after she died, and he simply put at the end, "Mom won." I believe that statement to be true with my whole heart.

Susan won.

Praying for Mimi

I have been avoiding writing this entry because there is so much in my heart and it is so hard to find the words to say it adequately. I have given up on saying it well... I am settling for giving you an update on our lives over the last month and asking for your prayers.

Until a little over a month ago, Doug's Mom Susan has been doing very well. As many of you know, she has ovarian cancer and has been undergoing treatments for a little over 5 years. But about a month ago, things started to come unraveled in all different directions with very weird symptoms, hard to explain reactions, numbers that didn't make any sense....and we find ourselves currently standing in a place that I really wish we were not standing. Susan has been in and out of the hospital several times in the last few weeks and is currently taking the last chemo treatment the doctors have to offer her. The tumor has taken over her liver, and she is in a lot of pain, therefore they have been managing that pain with medication. The pain meds bring their own problems by making her very sleepy and causing her to see things that are not there. It will take time to see if the chemo she is on will work....so we are waiting and praying and hoping...

This whole process is really difficult. We love Susan so much...it is just so hard to watch someone you love going through this. But, watching Susan these last 5 years and being a part of this family as we take this journey together has taught me so much that I do not have room to put here on this blog. More than anything, it has caused me to grow in my trust and dependence on our amazing God who loves us so very much. But knowing He loves us and has a plan still doesn't make this easy....it still hurts and it is still scary at times, and it is still very hard. But we trust...we know that Jesus is the same today as He was 5 years ago....and that truly God is good all the time....so we rest in that.

One of my personal complicating factors has been trying to control my emotions through all this. In my current very pregnant state, I am not the most emotionally stable person to begin with. This entire pregnancy I have been about 10 times more emotional than I was with Danika. So....you take a very emotional pregnant woman who cries at McDonald's commercials...mix in a truly difficult emotional family crisis....and well....I'm not always able to pull myself together so well. That is hard. I wish I was able to be a little more put together to support my husband and family right now...but unfortunately, the "off" button on my emotions is kind of broken. And so we are dealing with that.

Thank you to all who are praying for Susan and our family right now. We appreciate it. We are praying fervently ourselves.

These pictures are of Danika and Susan at the hospital just a few weeks ago. Danika loves her Mimi so much...she is the first person she asks for when we pull her out of her crib in the morning, and she is the person she asks for when we pick her up from daycare in the evening...she always wants to go see Mimi.

Right now, we try to accommodate that request as often as we can...it is good for all of us.

We love you, Mimi. We are continually praying.

ps - I started a Caring Bridge site a few weeks ago to keep people updated on Susan's progress. If you are interested in receiving the link, e-mail me to let me know and I will get it to you.

Mother's Day in Erie

Mother's Day - May 10, 2009
What a GREAT Mother's day - let me recap for you....

  1. I got to wear a new dress! Love it! A gracious friend helped alter it so it would work for the giant pregnant woman, and it was perfect. Should work for all our weddings this summer. :) Always fun when you feel good!
  2. We enjoyed an awesome morning at church. LOVED our class.
  3. Danika was wearing big girl pants and went in the potty TWICE at church and didn't go in her pants at all! Yay!
  4. We got to see fun friends and enjoy breakfast at church - it was great.
  5. We got home with plenty of time to get lunch ready for our guests without stressing out.
  6. I made one of my FAVORITE meals, and it all turned out fine and I didn't burn a single thing! (You may think this is minor, but I honestly can't remember a single dinner party I have ever had that I didn't screw up at least ONE menu item...this was truly a first!)
  7. The food was ready when Doug's parents arrived and we were ALL able to enjoy lunch (even me!) - that is also a first.
  8. Danika was well behaved, even though she never got a nap....BONUS.
  9. Doug's Mom was feeling pretty good and we got to spend a GREAT afternoon laughing and hanging out.
  10. Aunt Barbie was here to visit....another wonderful bonus! :)
  11. Did I mention I love my in-law family? It was a great day with them.
  12. It was sunny enough to go outside and play corn-hole for a while. The boards Doug built work great...and the bags my Mom made were perfect. :) Such wonderful "mid-west" fun. :)
  13. When everyone went home, we got to enjoy the rest of the evening just chilling as our own little family unit.
  14. ****DANIKA (my very NOT cuddly child) climbed up with me on the couch completely of her own accord, snuggled into my arms, wrapped her little hands around my hands and let me hold her for a full 45 minutes...and then fell asleep just like that. So completely out of character...and SO wonderful. It was the BEST part of the whole day. Happy Mother's Day to me!***
  15. After putting Danika to bed, Doug and I got to sit by a fire in our backyard at our new firepit (Thanks Dana & Susan! Great gift!) and just talk and laugh...just the two of us...until we decided it was time for bed. Perfect ending to a perfect day. Bliss.

I love this little girl!

Great day. :)

Susan update...

Sorry for those that I left hanging about Susan's treatment. Things went well...her numbers are only down slightly, but they are at least going in the right direction. Treatment went fine and she had her usual days of feeling sick and exhausted following the chemo. As usual, she looks great, you would have no idea she is going through any of this, and she was back in action to go on a mini-"vacation" on Tuesday last week. I'll write more about that later. Anyway...thanks for those that were praying.

News on Susan...

All I can ask is for your prayers. Today has been no fun with Doug and I both being so sick...and it made us both feel like we got robbed of a wonderful and important family day with Dana and Susan on top of it. Please pray for Susan and for our family. Here is the latest update:

Subject: test results from last Thursday

Psalm 28:7The Lord is my Strength and my [impenetrable] Shield; my heart trusts in, relies on, and confidently leans on Him, and I am helped; therefore my heart greatly rejoices, and with my song will I praise Him.

Thought I’d let you all know some of the results of the tests Thursday.
I got a call from Dr. Krivak on Saturday and I have more cancer spots on my lung and liver about the size of marbles. That’s why the count has gone up. He hasn’t gotten the biopsy report back yet…so didn’t know if it was back in the area where he removed the tumor. The CT scan showed that possibly it is. He was VERY concerned and even said he’ll do everything he can to keep me alive. He was so precious..he said I wasn’t just a patient to him, I was more like his next door neighbor and he thinks highly of Dana and me. He actually made me cry when I got off the phone, because I know he genuinely cares about me. He apologized for his behavior Thursday…he was very visibly upset when he was with us. I’ve never seen him upset (almost angry) like that. I know now that it was because he was frustrated and that he felt he had failed me.
He’s going to try to get me on the clinical trial…we’re hoping I qualify. I’ll probably start the new chemo, if approved within 2 weeks. I have to go through some preliminary tests first. There have only been 50 women who have tried this… there are many scary side affects, including death, but I feel I should try this. What choice do I really have? Doxil doesn’t work anymore as the cancer has become resistant. There is another chemo drug he’ll try if the clinical trial doesn’t work…but he said I’d have to be hospitalized for the first treatment because of my reaction to Carboplatin before. The drug is part of the ‘platin’ family. Also, this chemo treatment would be every 2 weeks and would knock me down pretty good. He doubted if I’d be able to work. He also said he’d start me on Avastin, which is the drug they’ll have my sister on too. I’ll just keep asking you all to pray… and I will continue to pray for God’s healing touch. I know the Lord is using this… and I praise Him for that. I will just continue to rest in His promise that I won’t be burned…that the waters won’t overwhelm me and that He is with me.
Thank you for traveling this road with us… it’s quite an adventure isn’t it? Never a dull moment.
Love you all,
Susan

Some not so good news...

As many of you know, Doug's Mom, Susan, has been dealing with ovarian cancer for about 4 years now. We got some pretty crappy news on Thursday, so we would appreciate your prayers. Here is Susan's latest update e-mail that she sends out to her prayer partners. I thought it pretty much says it all, so I just cut and pasted it in here.

Please keep her, Dana, Doug and our whole family in your prayers...we appreciate it!

Subject: chemo? 3/20/2008

Isaiah 43:2 “You will pass through deep waters. But I will be with you. You will pass through the rivers. But their waters will not sweep over you. You will walk through fire. But you will not be burned. The flames will not harm you.”

You might wonder why I chose that verse. I believe the Lord gave it to me, as I read it this morning before leaving for Pittsburgh . I thought that it was meant for me to share with my sister, Barb. Just knew it was for her, but when I finished asking the Lord if that’s what He had in mind, I knew it was actually a message for me today. So He prepared me beforehand that my news might not be so good today. I didn’t get chemo today. DOXIL is no longer working for me. The Phys. Asst. asked if I had been told my CA 125 and after responding, “no, what is it”, she told me it had gone up to 131. Wrong direction. She put a call into Dr. Krivak and he came immediately. Now I know why my appt. had to be at 8 AM this morning. Having to get up at 3:30 AM was a good thing after all. He would’ve been gone, if it had been made for a later time. He was visibly upset, thinking that the surgery he had done wasn’t successful. However, after the exam, he found that the tumor hadn’t grown back. He did a biopsy of the area to see if the tissue surrounding that area was cancerous. That was fun! He decided that since I had been so sick with the flu recently, he wanted another CA125 blood test done to see if the numbers had been skewed. So after he was done with me, I went for blood work. Also, to add to my enjoyment today, I was given that special treat of getting a CT scan, too. I got to drink 2 of my favorite banana smoothies. YUMMO! I may get some results tomorrow from the tests done today. Then they’ll decide the next step. They talked about a chemo treatment that would actually be 3 drugs administered every 2 weeks. This would really knock me down…as it dumps your blood counts and doesn’t give you time to recoup. The other treatment is a trial drug. It’s actually about 10 years away from being offered to the public, but they are getting good results from it at the trial stage. I’m leaning that direction right now. This one would be every 4 weeks. He also talked about radiation again, but hoping he’ll rule that out. He said he’d want me to stay in Pittsburgh to have it and this would take 6 weeks of treatment every day, then I’d have to go back on chemo. I really don’t want radiation. So, right now I don’t have a lot of information…just have to wait for test results and for Dr. Krivak to decide the next line of treatment. On the up side… I don’t have to deal with the after affects of chemo this weekend. I can enjoy Easter Sunday at church and with my family afterwards. However, that probably means I’ll have to do dishes and I was hoping to get out of that.

I would appreciate your prayers for my sister, Barb. Many of you know already, but for those of you who don’t, after almost a year of being cancer free, it has returned and hit her lung. She had her medi-port put in this week and will be starting chemo treatment very soon. Her past experience with chemo has not been good. They had to stop it before they finished the prescribed round. So we’re praying that this will go much better. My mom will be leaving Monday to spend about a month in FL with her. Her husband is still stationed in VA and will hopefully be home for good come June. She has 2 teenage boys, 14 & 16.
I guess the verse hit me because it didn’t promise that you wouldn’t have to go through hard times, but it did promise that we wouldn’t have to go through it alone. The Lord is with us and this trial won’t overtake us.

Thank you for praying…
Love,
Susan

Susan's Surgery

Doug's mom had surgery on Wednesday, February 6th. Doug, Danika and I were there for most of the day. While surgery is never fun, Susan did really well, there were no complications, and this went way easier than the major surgeries she has had in the past.

Susan was supposed to be able to go home that night, but they decided that she had to stay. They said if any complications developed, they wanted her already at the hospital, not 2+ hours away.

We had Danika with us, so we kind of "moved in" to the hospital room. :) You can see Danika and all her toys camped out on the oversized window ledge.

We are grateful to God for the way He has provided for our family and for the way He has protected Susan. Thank you to all who have prayed for us and for her....it is appreciated more than we could ever put into words. God has been so good to us over this four year journey...He has taught us so much, and He has continued to provide exactly what we need each step of the way. Thank you for your love and support!
